Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re definitely not alone. With hundreds of photographers, endless editing styles, and more advice than you know what to do with, it can be hard to know what actually matters.

The truth is, your wedding photos are one of the only things you’ll have long after the day is over. Long after the tables have been cleared and the flowers have gone, your photographs are what will transport you back to the people, emotions, and moments that made your wedding yours.

As a wedding photographer myself, I’ve seen firsthand what makes the biggest difference, not only in the final gallery, but in the experience my couples have on the wedding day. Here are a few things I truly think matter… and a few that don’t.

What to Look for When Choosing a Wedding Photographer.

1. Their Approach and Presence on the Wedding Day

Most couples don’t think about this, but your photographer will be with you more than almost anyone else.
Their presence should feel calming, supportive, and aligned with your personality.

Your experience with your photographer will affect your photos as much as their camera does.

If you need a lot of direction will they give it? Do you feel uncomfortable around them? Do your personalities mix?

You don’t have to become best friends (although that is always a plus!) but you do have to feel comfortable and aligned with your photographer to ensure that you have a great experience on your big day!

2. Consistency in Full Galleries (Not Just Instagram Highlights and Followers)

It’s so easy to get caught up in Instagram these days. Beautiful feeds, virality, and huge follower counts can make it seem like those things automatically equal experience, but they really don’t.

Some incredibly talented photographers barely post on social media, while others spend far more time creating content than they do photographing weddings.

When choosing a wedding photographer, instead of looking at follower count, pay attention to the things that actually matter: Do they consistently deliver beautiful galleries? Do they have reviews from happy couples? Do they make you feel excited and confident about trusting them with your wedding day?

Instagram only shows the best 1%. Full galleries reveal how they handle harsh sun, how they shoot receptions, whether they capture moments and details, and how they adapt to different lighting situations.

If their full galleries look consistent across different weddings, you’re in good hands.

3. Their Editing Style And Whether It Matches the Vibe You Actually Want

This is so important and a lot of couples don’t think about it until it’s too late. Your photographer’s editing style shouldn’t just look pretty, it should match the vibe you’re drawn to.

So, if you want warm, dramatic, cinematic photos with depth, don’t book someone who edits light and airy.

If you love true-to-color, clean images, don’t choose someone whose portfolio leans dark, moody, or film-inspired.

There is no “wrong” style of editing, just ones that align better with you!

Your photographer’s editing style is their signature, it’s not something they can (or should) change. Choose the style you want to see your story told in.

4. Backup Systems and Professional Experience

This is one of those things you probably won’t think to ask about, but you absolutely should.

Technology isn’t perfect: cameras can malfunction, memory cards can fail, and hard drives can just decide to stop working. A professional photographer should have systems in place so that if something unexpected happens, your memories are still protected.

Personally, I photograph every wedding using dual memory cards, meaning every image is saved to two cards at the exact same time. Once I get home, your photos are backed up onto multiple hard drives before I even begin editing.

Hopefully those backups never need to be used, but having them in place means you never have to worry if the unexpected happens. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes details that is often forgotten by couples but it’s incredibly important.

5. Whether Their Work Makes You Feel Something

Beyond technical skill, the images in their galleries should be able to invoke emotion. Can you imagine yourself in their photos? Do their galleries tell a story or just show poses?

Connection matters, and being able to resonate with the story that your photos will tell matters. You should feel something when you look at their work.

6. Make Sure You Actually Like Your Wedding Photographer

This one might sound obvious, but it’s something many couples overlook.

You’ll likely spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else. They’ll be there while you’re getting ready, during some of the most emotional moments of the day, and probably hanging around long after dinner has started. That’s a lot of time to spend with someone, so it’s important that you genuinely enjoy being around them.

When you’re chatting with potential photographers, ask yourself a few questions. Do they make you feel comfortable? Do they seem like someone you can trust? Can you picture spending eight or ten hours with them without feeling awkward?

At the end of the day, your photographer’s energy becomes part of your wedding day experience. The more comfortable you feel, the more relaxed you’ll be in front of the camera and that always translates into more genuine photographs.

7. Reviews Tell You More Than a Pretty Instagram Feed

A beautiful portfolio is important, but don’t stop there. One of the first things I recommend doing is reading through a photographer’s reviews.

Pay attention to what past couples are actually saying. Are they talking about how comfortable they felt? How calm their photographer made them feel? How they captured moments they didn’t even realize were happening?

At the end of the day, your photographer isn’t just delivering images, they’re helping guide one of the biggest days of your life. Hearing about other couples’ experiences can tell you just as much as looking through their portfolio.

Things That Don’t Matter as Much as People Think.

1. Whether They’ve Shot at Your Venue Before

It’s a bonus, but not a dealbreaker. A skilled photographer knows how to adapt to any location, any light, any weather. What actually matters is their creativity and comfort in changing environments.

2. The Size of Their Following or “Aesthetic” on Instagram

Pretty grids don’t guarantee beautiful wedding galleries and followers don’t equal experience. What matters more are consistency, solid galleries, real client reviews, and professionalism.

3. Whether They Use the “Best” or Newest Gear

The best camera in the world doesn’t matter if the person behind it doesn’t know how to tell a story. Professionals use reliable gear but talent wins over tech every single time.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, choosing the right wedding photographer isn’t about finding the fanciest camera, the biggest Instagram following, or even the lowest price… It’s about finding someone you trust to preserve one of the most meaningful days of your life.

Years from now, you likely won’t remember what camera your photographer used or how many followers they had. Choose someone whose work makes you feel something, whose personality meshes well with you and your partner’s, and whose approach allows you to stay fully present on your wedding day. Because when the day is over, your photographs become one of the only tangible pieces of it that you’ll carry with you forever.
